More developments at Ballincollig Regional Park...May 2015

This should be of interest to anyone that uses the Ballincollig Regional Park for training.

Back at the start of April 2015, I had a post up about the launch of a new 3km running/walking route in the Regional Park.

The following information should be appearing in various newspapers today which may well have an impact on that route...

Regional Park, Ballincollig Walking Route

Location: In the townlands of Great Island and Ballincollig.

Nature and extent of proposed development: Construction of a 3.0m to 4.0m wide walking route, resurfacing works to existing 3.0m – 4.0m wide paths, boundary fencing, seating, bins, signage and associated works at the Regional Park, Ballincollig. The route will commence at end of the existing tarmacadam surfaced path at the timber bridge and follow the route of the existing gravel path past the allotments site. It will then continue into a section of Cork County Council land currently not part of the Park before linking back up with existing gravel path within the existing park boundary for a total distance of approximately 1.635km.

This map below shows the proposed development...

 a) The section around the '1k' mark on the map currently has a compact surface. This will be replaced with tarmac. No big deal for runners or walkers but it will be for wheelchair users.

b) The rough gravel surface by the allotments will be replaced by tarmac which is a big improvement.

c) The section marked in orange and yellow above is probably the most interesting. This is currently outside the park and its inclusion will mean that people can make a loop out of a run which takes in more of the park. At present, this eastern section is 'out and back' if anyone wants to use it.

The changes outlined aren't huge but at least they should give runners another option. It should be possible to do a larger loop without using the same paths.

More information can be found on the Cork County Council website.
