Results of the Emer Casey 10k road race - Sun 22nd May 2011

From what I hear, this race took place in dry but windy conditions in Youghal in East Cork. The winner of the mens race was Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers who ran the 10 km course in a time of 30:36, an average of 4:55 per mile. Sergiu was almost 2 and a half minutes ahead of the 2nd placed man Ruairi O'Donnell of Limerick AC in 33:05. The gap to the 3rd man was a lot smaller with Brian Hegarty of Leevale AC finishing in 33:11.

In the ladies race, Rhona Lynch of Eagle AC won in a time of 38:16. In 2nd place, Niamh Walsh of Leevale AC finished in 39:45 while Mary Sweeney of St.Finbarrs AC took 3rd in 40:54.

It was a tough race yesterday! The first 3/4 mile was into a strong headwind - at least you got some shelter behind the guy in front! After the 3 mile mark we were again battling a strong headwind until just after 4. Then the final 400m was into a gale force wind!

Good show again by the Emer Casey Foundation. During the prize-giving, a cheque for €50,000 (yes, fifty grand!) was handed over to Discovary for research by prof. John O'Leary and his proteges.

Take a bow Emer Casey Foundation....and everyone who ran, jogged or walked helped to make this happen.....not to mention all the backroom people, without whom it wouldn't have been possible.

Last year approx. 32,000 people in Ireland were diagnosed with some form of Cancer. Scary stuff, but events like this help fundraise and raise awareness.

Well done everyone who took part, organised and assisted with this event. Would love to see some photo's from the day, any links to photo albums of this run?

Great run again this year, however the wind made it tough...last year it was the blistering sun! This is my 5th year taking part and it's great to see good numbers turning out for such a worthy cause.

I would love to have an earlier start and know more that would have done it if it was earlier 11 or 11.30 but still very happy to partake.

Well done to the Emer Casey foundation and the great work being done and of course to the Casey family and all concerned.
