Results of the Ballycotton 5 mile road race.....Thurs 27th Aug 2009
The 500 mark was breached for the first time last night when a total of 505 runners turned out for the final race in the Ballycotton 5 mile Summer Series. Only a few years ago, it seemed amazing when the numbers went over 300 for the first time
!
The full results with 2 photo galleries are shown below.

Preview of the Ballycotton 5 Mile Road Race......Thurs 27th Aug 2009
This is the 4th and final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series in East Cork.

Start and Registration...First of all note that it is 7:30 pm!! , not 8pm. There is some distance between the parking area, registration and the start of the race. Parking is usually in a field on the way into the village on the left. Give yourself plenty of time for this one. The car park is about 600 metres from the National school where the registrations are taken. Considering that this race is likely to attract in excess of 400 entries, there will probably be delays there. If you have to then go back to your car to get changed, then that's another 600 metres and then you need to jog another 900m to get back to the start line!! All this takes time so you should really try and enter early.

As for the entries, inside the hall in the school, there will be 2 queues....

Queue 1)...Any runner who ran the first 3 races of the Ballycotton Summer Series (Ballyandreen ‘5’ & Shanagarry '5' & Churchtown South '5'). The race number you get corresponds with your overall position after the first three races.
Please join the correct queue in the main hall and ask for your number from the list ............1 to 168 (men) and 201 to 264 (women)..........which will also be posted on the wall.

Queue 2)...Any new runners can enter as normal in the committee room just off the main hall. This is not a BHAA race, so if you are not a member of an athletics club just say where you are from (Cork, Charleville, Cloyne).
Entry fee is €6 with €1 donated to charity which this year is Garryglass Children's Holiday Home - this is the house that is used for entries and changing at the Ballyandreen race.

Having the correct amount ready helps to speed up the process.

Course...The first 3 miles of this race are pretty easy as they are mostly slightly downhill or flat. The tough work comes in the last 2 miles. First of all, there is a short but steep hill just before the 3 mile mark which will almost certainly slow you down. At the top of the hill, you turn the corner and the 3 mile will be just there. After that, it's mainly flat with some small bit of uphill and downhill running. The next hard section is after the 4 mile mark where you re-join the main road going back into Ballycotton. For any of you who have done the Ballycotton 10 road race, this is the famous hill around the 8.5 mile in that race. It's not that steep but it's about 400 metres long and gradually reduces in intensity. Once it flattens out, you'll have a nice run into the finish in the village.

If you want to have a closer look at the course and need directions (it's in Ballycotton!!), then look at the following link........
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/453964670

The plaques for completing the four races will be given out after the finish - people must hand in their race number (marked 'plaque winner') to receive plaque. Overall prizes and T-shirts will be presented in the hall afterwards.

A quick look at the Connemara 100.......
Someone mentioned this race to me last week and a few days later, I received a mail with some interesting links. So what exactly is the Connemara 100???

Most of you will know that a Marathon is 26.2 miles, usually the longest distance race for most people. While there are several of these in Ireland (Dublin, Cork, Belfast, etc), there is an Ultra-Marathon race every Spring in Connemara which is one and a half Marathons long........i.e. 39.2 miles. Up to recently, that was the longest race there was in Ireland until the 15th of August of this year when the Connemara 100 was held.........that's 100 miles, not 100 kms!

It's almost impossible to get your head around that kind of distance..........100 miles........almost 4 Marathons and the time limit is 30 hours! I can imagine it must be tough trying to run 2 Marathons but almost 4?!?!

The event was won by Mick Rice of Athenry AC who averaged around 9 min per mile..........i.e. he probably ran most if not all of it...........i.e. no walking. An incredible feat...

In second place was Joanne Fearon who is living in Cork. In fact, 3 of the first 5 finishers were women which seems a bit unusual. Joanne has an interesting detailed account of her race up on this website.

The full results of the Connemara 100 can be seen HERE.

There is a small photo gallery HERE.

100 miles in less than 30 hours...........do you think you could do it???

Comments......??
Results of the poll........Would you count a personal best over a downhill course?
This poll ran for a period of 2 weeks after the Kinsale 5 mile.......a road race which has a reputation of being a fast course. It starts up on a hill and it finishes near sea level with no real climbs along the route and the debate about it showed a wide range of views. Perhaps the most suprising result was that those for and against were more or less exactly split.

Excessive running can be as addictive as taking drugs...........
........or at least that's what a headline in today's Sundays Independent suggests. They write that........."Sudden withdrawal of the activity leads to symptoms like those seen in addicts: trembling, writhing, teeth chattering, and drooping eyelids."

Some familiar?.........hmmm......I didn't think so!

Looks like another newspaper story picking up on some piece of research based on a very small percentage and hyping it up to be of interest to the 'armchair experts'.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race...Wed 19th Aug 2009
Somewhere in the region of 330 runners turned out for this 5 mile road race in the Naval base in Ringaskiddy. While the numbers seem to be down on recent BHAA races, it might be easy to assume that some people stayed because of the weather. But when you compare it to previous years, the numbers are up (2007...205, 2008...277) so it's another record turnout.

By the way, some of you will have noticed the ongoing debate about refreshments after races. It has to be said that as always, the Navy put on an excellent spread after the race last night.

Lost & Found.........Did someone lose a pair of NIKE Pegasus runners....??? See the message below...
"Somebody left their runners+socks behind after the race. I wonder if you could put a message on your Blog.
NIKE Pegasus 25US 9, UK 8, EUR 42.5, CM 27, with yellow soles.
I presume this is a Ladies size?
This was in a parking area, which you'd reach by turning right at the mini-roundabout at the entrance to the Navy Base."

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile Road Race...Wed 19th Aug 2009
The first thing to note about this race is the start time........7:30pm! Most of the summer evening races in Cork start at 8pm but with the evenings closing in, they tend to start that bit earlier in August.

Getting there....Just get to Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area. The registration is usually in the Sports Hall on the base. Just join the correct queue.......€5 for registered runners and €7 for non-registered.

Course details...The start and finish points are in the Naval base itself. The course goes back over the bridges towards Ringaskiddy and on to the 1 mile mark.....most of it reasonably level with a slight pull over the bridges. Around the 1.5 mile mark, you take a sharp left and climb 500 m up a steep hill. This is by far the hardest part of the race as the hill is long enough and steep enough to leave you out of breath if you push too hard. Then you take a right onto a quite backroad above Ringakiddy and on to the 2 mile mark. This road rises and falls a bit until you join the main road again that was part of the Novartis 5k route. From here, you run downhill past the 3 mile mark into Ringaskiddy and then the last 2 miles are pretty flat until you finish back inside the Naval base. The only hill along the last mile is the bit over the bridges again.

Overall......a pretty reasonable course with just one bad hill. Depending on the weather, the numbers for this race may be well over 400. So with the big numbers entering and the fact the race starts at 7:30pm, you need to keep an eye on the time.
Thought for Food / Food for Thought...

I received the following e-mail and it concerns a subject dear to all our hearts.......the refreshments after a race ;o)

Have a read through it and see do you agree / disagree??

The standard of food on offer after races varies considerably, from nothing at all to bread and butter sandwiches, biscuits through to pastries, cakes and all you can eat.
Some of the perennial questions race organisers ask include: “How many (runners) will we get?” and “What (food) will be give them?” Neither is an easy question to answer, particularly in light of the huge rise in race entries in recent times.

However one thing has struck me in the last year or two: after many races, in spite of (apparently) plenty of fare being on offer, many runners find, after their warmdown or shower (or both), that there is little or no food left for them.

It seems to me that many races have a reputation for putting on a fine fare of afters and that these, relative to those that do not have such a reputation, draw a bigger crowd of families and other supporters.
During the past year or so, I spent a period of enforced absence from running/racing but attended races nevertheless, taking photos, and I was able to see firsthand what happens immediately after race finish at many of these family attended events.

While the runners warmdown, shower, change or do whatever it is that runners do after races, the families and supporters swoop on the fare, rapidly depleting, even exhausting stocks, leaving only the remains for the main people, the runners.

It is common to see tables of mainly, non-runners) with lots of half-eaten cakes and sandwiches in from of them, with (staving) envious runners circling tables like vultures looking for unwanted fare. Bear in mind that most runners will not have eaten for several hours before the race, while the supporters will almost certainly have had their meal beforehand.

I don’t have an answer to this, but would be interested in finding out what others think.

There are several suggestions that come to mind, but most of these involve additional manpower, which itself is always in short supply at races. Even having separate tables of food offerings for non-runners involves more manpower, control and resources.

Probably the most practical option, from the organisers viewpoint, is to hold back the ‘best wine’ until the main body of runners filters in.

What do others think? Anyone replying might consider their answer in terms of race organisation and manpower limitation.

Btw, what REALLY ‘gets on my wick’ in this regard is the very small minority of ‘interlopers’ who neither enter the race nor pay any entry fee, but nevertheless proceed to use the race facilities and eat the food on offer.

Well do you agree or disagree with the sentiments above? Is there an obvious solution?

Results of the John Hartnett Challenge - Sun 16th Aug 2009
There was a small turnout for this race with just 56 runners taking part. Yet despite that, it was one of the better races on the calendar this season. It certainly lived up to it's billing as a 'Challenge' with no shortage of hills. The race was basically in 2 halves............the first 5 miles were more or less all uphill with the last 4.5 miles all downhill. There were 3 off-road sections......the first one was on a nice forest road through the woods. The second part was the longest section off the public road. While the surface was a bit rough, it really didn't matter as you were running slow anyway as you were going uphill. The 3rd and last section was reasonably short but it was probably a bit too rough considering that you were running downhill. That is the one section that the organisers will probably look at improving for next year. Other than that, the rest of the race was fine. Anyone who stayed away because they thought the race might be over rough ground were mistaken. Talking to people afterwards, most people seemed to agree that it was a good race and that they would probably do it again. That fact alone say's a lot about the event. No doubt next year, the numbers will be even higher.

Preview of the 'John Harnett Challenge'.......Sun 16th Aug 2009
This is a new race on the race calendar and it should live up to it's title. It's roughly 9.5 miles long (not 10 miles) and is over a mixed public road/forest track surface.

Getting there.......the race starts and finishes just to the south of Ballyhooly near Fermoy in NE Cork. To get there, you need to drive into Fermoy and follow the old Dublin road. After you cross the bridge, you need to turn left at the church with the 3 statues outside and take the N72 west for Castletownroche and Mallow. Ballyhooly is on this road. When you enter the village, look out for signs for the GAA pitch. The registration and changing rooms are there. The start and finish points are just to the south of Ballyhooly....see the map here for an idea of where it is.

The race starts at 12:30pm.

Route.......the race starts just to the south of the village near the bridge over the Blackwater river. You run south to the road junction and straight away, you're climbing. Pretty soon, you turn off right onto forest track with a well packed smooth surface. This is shown as Green on the map. The running is flat for a while but you turn right and then start climbing again. After that, the gradient eases off until you are back onto the public road again (shown in Blue).
Then you have a 3 km long but gradual climb until you turn off right again into the forestry, shown in Red. This section has a lot fewer big trees and is probably the hardest part of the run. The forest road surface this time is a bit rougher but should be ok. The incline starts easily but soon, it really gets tough until you reach the highest point at 330m asl, about 300 metres higher than when you first started out. Just to put that into perspective, Cork Airport is about 140 metres above Cork City so this is over twice the climb.

At the highest point, I'd reckon you are close to the 4 mile mark. After that, it's downhill all the ways. You lose height on the forest road until you re-join the public road (blue), down the road a bit, accross a straight section of forest road and then downhill to the finish.

Overall.........this is no fun run. It will live up to it's name....i.e. a challenge run. The first 4 miles will be uphill and slow and the last 5.5 miles are downhill and fast. It's probably best not to wear racing shoes....just use the regular runners for a bit extra cushioning.

Results of the Poll about the relay event in the Cork City Marathon...
Just before the Cork City Marathon, I posted an article by David O'Dwyer about the merits or otherwise of the Relay event in the Cork City Marathon and it provoked a bit bit of debate and discusion. For all that, it was still difficult to estimate what percentage of people thought the relay was a bad idea. Hence the poll...

The particular poll asked the question "For the Cork City Marathon, would you prefer if it was....
1) For Marathon Runners only...?
2) For Marathon and Relay runners...?
3) Don't care / Not interested...

309 people took part in the poll which is a very large sample. It looks as if 77% of people thought the Relay was a good idea with a much smaller 16% thinking it was a bad idea.

So while a small percentage disagree with the relay event, a resounding majority give it the thumbs up.

Some running related items on the BBC News website...
I came accross 2 news items on the BBC News website over the last few days.

The first item is about a juice that boosts stamina and could help people exercise for up to 16% longer....just the thing for a Marathon....although I can't see this one taking off ;o)

And the second item is about a Somali runner who can run as 19 minutes for a 5km, 40 minutes for a 10k, 1:30 for a half marathon and ran the London Marathon in 3 hrs 14 min. At first, it might not sound like anything special until you read the full story.
Results of the 'Route to Crook' 5 Mile Road Race...Sun 9th August 2009
From what I hear, the weather conditions for this race were pretty wet which was a pity considering how scenic the area is. As the Under 16's had their own seperate race, the overall numbers in the main race were down (~160 to 129) but in reality there was probably the same number of adults as last year. 129 is a pretty good number considering the weather conditions and how far Goleen is from from Cork city. I was working out beforehand that if I was to travel to it, I'd probaby drive to Portlaoise in about the same time!

Preview of the 'Route to Crook' 5 mile road race...Sun 9th August 2009
This 5 mile road race starts in Goleen at 7pm on Sunday, the 9th of August. The route goes from Goleen to Crookhaven along the coast road which no doubt would be a stunning route if the weather is fine.

Getting there........If you are coming from Cork city, then it's a long way down. It's about 120 kms and the drive will take approx 2h 05m. If you are west of the city then it's obviously less. Considering the drive and the fact that it's on a Sunday night and a lot of people will have work on Monday, I wonder if the turnout will be that big? It seems to me that a Friday or Saturday date would have made more sense?

Changes this year.....One of the complaints that I heard from previous years were the number of kids running and causing an obstruction at the start of the race. This year, they are starting 15 minutes before the main race which should help a lot.

There is a flyer for the race HERE.

Results of the Shanagarry Festival 5km road race...Thurs 6th August 2009
A total of 92 runners turned out for this 5km race in the heart of East Cork. While at first the numbers may seem a bit small, it was actually a new record for this event as they usually only get around 60-70 runners.

Photos.....
The thing about the Shanagarry 5k race is that it really is a nice 'local' type of race on mostly quiet country roads. Jorge Ruiz Villasante was out again with his camera and I think he has captured some of that special appeal in his photos HERE.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km road race - Wed 5th Aug 2009 (Updated Thurs 6th 11pm)
They always seem to get nice weather for this race and so it turned out again last night with a nice mild summers evening. Somewhere in the region of 470 runners turned out for this 5 km road race, an increase of about 50 on last year's figure of 416.

Results........the full results are now available HERE.

Photos........
1) Jorge Ruiz Villasante was out again with his camera and took another excellent series of photos. Here are a selection that I picked out.

In this shot, Jorge uses the natural dip in the road to capture almost all
of the 470 runners as they head towards the half-mile mark.

At first sight, perhaps not the nicest of photos? Yet, the BHAA are an inter-company series of road races and the race did take place in a largely industrial area so the photo puts the rest into context.

'Where's the start???'

'Oooooooo......that hill !!'

Preview of the Shanagarry Festival 5km Road Race - Thurs 6th Aug (8pm)
This race is usually a pretty low key event with only about 60 to 80 runners taking part. There are no big prizes or anything like that, it's just a very simple 5k race which is usually held every year in August.

Location...The race starts and finishes in the village of Shanagarry in East Cork. If you are not sure of where that is, it is on the road between Midleton and Ballycotton. See the top map. Cloyne and Ballycotton are shown for reference.

Course...See map below. You start in Shanagarry, just outside the Church (or just next to the finish line in the 5 mile race if you know where that is). You run back towards Cork, passing the garage and the road junction and after a pretty flat 1 km, you take a left. You are now onto real quiet country roads until you re-join the road to Ballycotton at about the 2.5 mile mark. Then it's left, back into Shanagarry, right past the garage and the 3 mile mark and the finish is in the little dip just outside the GAA club. Overall, the course is reasonably flat and there are no real hills to speak of.

If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website. See HERE.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Novartis' 5 km Road Race - Wed 5th Aug (8pm)
This 5 km road race takes place at 8pm on Wednesday evening, the 5th of August. Registration is in the Novartis plant and the start and finish points are just outside the entrance. This is exactly the same route as the Cork BHAA IPS/Garda 5k back in May except that the start and finish points are at different point on the loop.

Directions...If you are not sure of where to go, then just follow the signs for the car ferry from Cork city. As you enter Ringaskiddy, take the first right and go up the hill. The Novartis plant is about 1 km up this road on the right.

Registration....There will be 2 entry desks as normal.......one for registered runners (€5) and one for non-registered (€7). As always, it will help to get there as early as possible, especially considering that the weather forecast looks ok and there should be a big turnout.

Course details...This is a hilly 5 km race yet it seems to produce some fast times. The start and finish are more or less in the same spot just outside the Novartis plant. The first mile is probably the fastest with an overall fall of ground to the 1 mile mark. The 2nd mile is a long drag all the ways up that hill by Pfizers and Shanbally. The 3rd mile has a bit of everything......it starts with a pull up out of Shanbally, then a downhill section and then finishes halfway up a steep hill. Beyond the 3 mile mark, the final 150 metres or so is a tough pull and the finish line is just beyond the end of the climb.
